Smartphones today have a chip inside of them called a GPS chip. This chip uses satellites to calculate your exact position (this is why when you are inside a GPS chip can be confused to where you location actually is or just does not work at all). Services like Google Maps can then map them. When a GPS signal is unavailable, cell towers can then be used to triangulate your approximate position (this method is not as accurate).
